Do I need a license or permit to do this? Instead of buying another for sale, just wanting to sell my crafts I recently did a show at the World Market Center in Las Vegas where I sold wholesale and some retail and need to pay sales tax yes are you a separate business or are you affiliated with the state of Nevada.?

Wholesale Business

Today, total U.S. Wholesale Business sales are about $3.3 trillion. Since the late 1980s, wholesale of gross domestic product (GDP) is at 7 percent, with industries such as grocery and food-service distributors (about 14% of about 400 billion revenues)  to  other industries such as the furniture wholesalers.

Wholesale Business  is  buying and selling  products at a low price, then making a profit by selling it at a price that still makes the deal attractive to your customer.

First, select your Wholesale Business structure: Sole Proprietor, Partnership, LLC or corporation. Therefore, a Wholesale Business seller's permit is required if you sell merchandise wholesale or retail.

If you are an employer, you will need a federal employer number and a state employer number.

Users with a trade name will need a fictitious business name filing.

Finally, you have the option of incorporating or forming a Wholesale Business LLC.wanted to know what it takes to make your residence a sober living home painting drywall and handyman services. Thank you for your assistance. I am in the early stages of forming a plan, deciding on my fictitious name and such.

So I am just doing research right now. I have a DBA, I am required for a license for floor maintenance, I need certification in my county of Camden, NJ, I need an office or can I give my service from home to my business partner and I need to obtain a seller's permit.

If we apply through you, where do you send our information to & how long is it until we receive confirmation? Hi, what do I need to buy wholesale and sell retail on eBay? Etc We need to use your service to establish a new business in Rancho Mission Viejo 92694 hello to the market why he was standing with me oh my goodness. Yes eBay, yes, easy, yes Amazon, type locations selling nationwide, how much does it cost to start my own marijuana delivery service thinking about putting my crafts in a craft show, do.

WHAT IS A Wholesale or Resale Permit?

A Wholesale License is not for your type of wholesale only - it is the same as a seller's permit. If you are a home business, some jurisdictions require you to get both a seller's permit and a business license.

Business licenses exist because the government wants to make sure you comply with business rules. For example, health practices etc.

On the other hand, a seller's permit is for businesses that want to buy or sell wholesale or sell resale.

In your case, buying 10 items at $10 each wholesale saves you $8 because @ 8% sales tax, that is how much you save. Nevertheless, you still need to collect the 8% when selling the items.

In addition, because you are using an assumed business name, also called a DBA (doing business as name) namely, "Twelvethirtyfour," is required to be registered with a DBA doing business as a certificate, an LLC or a corporation.

Let me create a comprehensive guide for your Amazon reselling business setup.

Market Overview & Initial Investment

Third-party sellers on Amazon generated over $300 billion in sales in 2023. The barrier to entry can be relatively modest - many successful resellers start with $3,000-$5,000, which typically covers:
  • Initial inventory: $2,000-$3,000

  • Business formation fees: $500-$800

  • Amazon Professional Seller account: $39.99/month

  • Basic inventory management software: $30-50/month

  • Product photography equipment (optional): $200-400

  • Business Structure Considerations

An LLC offers personal asset protection while maintaining operational flexibility. S-Corps can provide tax advantages through salary/distribution optimization once your profits exceed approximately $40,000 annually. The choice depends on your growth projections and complexity tolerance.

    Essential Numbers & Documentation

EIN (Employer Identification Number) functions as your business's social security number for:
  • Opening business bank accounts

  • Filing business tax returns

  • Handling payroll if you hire employees

  • Working with suppliers and distributors

  • Permits & Registrations

    Resellers typically require:
  • Sales tax permit/seller's permit

  • Business license

  • Resale certificate

  • Amazon-Specific Requirements

  • Professional Seller Account registration

  • Product liability insurance (once exceeding $10,000 in monthly sales)

  • Reliable computer with high-speed internet

  • Inventory management system

  • Practical Tips

  • Start with 3-5 products to master the process

    Consider insurance coverage for:
  • General liability

  • Product liability

Alright, you're stepping into the wild world of online reselling! The Amazon marketplace is huge and booming, with over 300 million active customers just waiting to add stuff to their carts. With a business model like yours—sourcing branded goods from authorized suppliers and selling them online—you’re in prime territory for some sweet profits. But let’s break down what you need to keep things legit and well-structured.

    Initial Costs and Equipment Needed

Starting an Amazon resale business doesn’t require a ton of overhead, which is why it’s so appealing. Here’s a quick list of things you might want to budget for:
  • Inventory Costs: Your biggest expense will be buying inventory from suppliers or distributors. Since you’re looking for deals, this could range widely depending on what you buy and the brands you source.

  • Amazon Seller Account: Amazon’s Professional Seller account is about $39.99/month, and it’s worth it if you’re serious about selling because it saves you on fees.

  • Shipping and Storage: You’re using Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA), so Amazon will handle storage and shipping, but you’ll still pay fees for that convenience. It’s worth it for the time and hassle it saves.

  • LLC Formation: Forming an LLC usually has a one-time filing fee and possibly a yearly renewal fee, depending on where you register.

  • Software Tools: Tools like Jungle Scout, Helium 10, or Keepa can help you find products with high demand and low competition. Not necessary, but can be super helpful if you want to maximize profits.

  • Why an LLC Might Be Your Best Bet

Let’s talk about the Limited Liability Company (LLC) setup. This business structure is a popular choice for Amazon sellers because it separates your personal assets from your business assets. This means if, worst-case scenario, a legal issue pops up, only your business assets are at risk—not your house, car, or savings. An LLC also makes your business look more legitimate, which can help when you're negotiating with suppliers. Plus, it’s flexible with taxes; by default, the IRS taxes single-member LLCs as sole proprietorships and multi-member LLCs as partnerships. However, you can also choose to have your LLC taxed as an S corporation, which may offer tax advantages if you’re pulling in significant profits.

What’s the Deal with an EIN?

An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is like a Social Security Number for your business. Even if you’re not hiring employees, getting an EIN has benefits. You’ll need it to open a business bank account, which keeps your finances separate and makes life way easier come tax season. Plus, suppliers often ask for an EIN as part of their verification process, so having one on hand can streamline things when you’re purchasing inventory.

Do You Need a Seller's Permit?

Yes, you’re going to need a seller’s permit (or resale license) because you’re buying products for resale. This permit allows you to purchase goods from suppliers without paying sales tax, which keeps your costs down. Then, when you sell those products to customers, you collect sales tax on behalf of the state where the buyer is located (though Amazon helps automate this if you’re using FBA). Keep in mind, sales tax can be a bit of a patchwork, with different rules depending on where your buyers live. Some states require Amazon to collect and remit sales tax on your behalf, while others expect you to do it. But either way, having that seller’s permit is key to getting inventory tax-free from your suppliers.

    Business Licenses and Other Registrations

Depending on where you operate, you may need a basic business license. Some areas require all businesses, including online-only ones, to have a license simply to operate legally. This is usually a simple process, but it’s worth checking to see what’s required in your area.

Do You Need to Register Your Business Name?

If you’re using a business name that isn’t your full legal name, you might need to register it as a “Doing Business As” (DBA). This is especially useful if you’re planning to brand your Amazon store with something catchy or memorable rather than just your personal name. Registering a DBA isn’t required if you’re just using your name, but a unique name can help with branding and give your store a more professional vibe.

    Summary Checklist

Here’s a quick recap of what you’ll need to get set up:
  • LLC Formation – Provides liability protection and tax flexibility.

  • EIN – Essential for tax purposes and setting up a business bank account.

  • Seller's Permit – Allows you to buy inventory without paying sales tax.

  • Business License – May be required depending on where you're based.

  • DBA (optional) – Register a business name if it’s different from your own.
  • You’re all set to make some moves in the Amazon reselling game! Setting up these structures might feel like a bit

    Basic Business Licensing

A general business license and sales tax permit form the foundation for your Amazon reselling operation. As a reseller purchasing products from authorized suppliers and distributors, you'll need a resale certificate to avoid paying sales tax on wholesale purchases intended for resale.

    Professional Certifications and Product-Specific Requirements

Depending on your product categories, various certificates might apply - particularly for items like cosmetics, electronics, or food products. This includes:
  • UPC certification for product listings

  • Product safety certifications

  • Specialized permits for restricted categories

  • Home-Based Business Requirements

Operating from your residence requires specific permits, including a home occupation permit and zoning compliance documentation. Additional considerations include:
  • Home-based business registration

  • Insurance certificates

  • DBA (Doing Business As) registration if operating under a different name

  • Employer Identification Number if planning to hire employees

  • You can choose to be a(n) General Wholesale :

    • Sole Proprietor,
    • LLC,
    • Corporation or
    • Partnership.
After you decide and select your business entity, you need licensing.

Anchorage Business Tax Registration ( Business License)
All businesses including home, online or mobile BUSINESS need a BUSINESS license because they are BUSINESSES.

A(n) General Wholesale business using a fictitious business name in Anchorage Borough i.e. you are a business with a trade name other than the owner's legal (full name) name are required to get a(n) fictitious business name.   For instance you open a(n) General Wholesale business and you name it "Superior General Wholesale Group". You will need to file a fictitious business name for that name.

In AK you need a resale ID ( AKA seller's permit) if you selling touchable items.  (A.K.A state id, wholesale, resale, reseller certificate, about $39 for most states).
    Seller's Permit

Note: All businesses need a federal tax ID number except sole proprietors that are not employers and are not independent contractors.
An independent contractor is a self employed business person that receives more than $600 per year from anyone of his or her clients.
IRS rule: The client must issue a 1099 form to the independent contractor and the independent contractor must have a federal tax ID. However, even sole owners may obtain a federal ID and use it as a business tax ID instead of using their own social security number as a business tax ID number.
However, all other licenses that apply to sole proprietors as discussed here are requited regardless of getting a federal tax ID number.

In addition you will need a federal and a state EIN if you will hire employees. I.e., a AK Federal Tax Id Number ($29)  and a(n) AK  State Employer Tax Number

Instead of filing a fictitious business name DBA Filing (about $49 plus state and legal newspaper publication fees) in Anchorage, Incorporate in AK  or form a(n) AK LLC
    .

You have a choice to file a DBA or form an LLC or incorporate. If you will do business under your first and last legal name you will not need to get a fictitious business name.
Also note that even using your first and last name may not help you avoid filing a DBA if the name has a suffix such as "& sons" etc.

If you do form an Online Store llc or incorporate (about $49 plus state fees for most states) your General Wholesale business instead of just filing a fictitious business name (dba), it will help you avoid personal liability from wrongs arising from your business dealings and you will not have to file the Anchorage business name. In lieu of recording a Anchorage Borough trade company name (our filing service fee includes trade name registration and newspaper legal publication for 4 weeks) you can also form a corporation in AK or form an AK LLC (starts @ $49 plus state fee for most states & includes required documents such as bylaws for the corporation and Limited Liability operating agreement for the LLC). .
